Kelela – Hallucinogen [EP]

FKA twigs’ newest EP starts off promisingly: the layered-vocal launch of “The Message” might be the best moment of her discography (you’ll know it when you hear it), and though I find a lyric like “I won’t shed a tear, because waterworks are easy” a bit clunky, I like that she seems to actually care about the people she’s having sex with (as opposed to the cold transactions of LP1). And while nothing here is as good as “Two Weeks,” the more traditional R&B-leaning “Rewind” and “All the Way Down” (mostly for DJ Dahi’s hypnotically cascading beat) come close. But then the EP closes with two return-to-darkness tracks: the Arca showcase that is the title track and the slow crawl of “The High” that aims for the Weeknd’s early stuff but misses. Can’t win them all, I guess.
