Laura Marling – Short Movie

Nostalgia for the too-remembered late-60s/early-70s: Joni Mitchell’s vocal inflections with a dash of Lou Reed swagger (“Strange”), describing New York City through both the electric guitar of Bringing It All Back Home and her lyrics, which quotes Neil Young on a song that reminds me too much of Sufjan Stevens (“Don’t Let Me Bring You Down”). This girl has consistently gotten scores in the 70-79 range (and I’m not just referring to Pitchfork) and been often included in the who-cares section of year-end lists. Me, I just hear a girl with a beautiful voice who has no idea what to do with it (unlike Ms. Mitchell), who hit her stride in her sophomore EP/debut single and has yet to recreate that magic, let alone that of her peers.
