Vince Staples – Hell Can Wait [EP]

Vince Staples gets off a few good lines every now and then (“My momma had me where them babies having babies at”; “Tappin’ they pockets / That pocket rocket make a backpacker as soon as you blockin’ / You know the block is hot”), but he’s mostly a complete non-entity; unengaging and his lyrics aren’t anything you haven’t heard before done better before (most recently on good kid, m.A.A.d. city, quoted here). Doesn’t help that the beats are your typical OF-type minimalism; the drum rolls throughout “Fire” are nice, ditto the melody in “65 Hunnid. Can’t say the same about the Hagler’s high-pitched synth in “Blue Suede,” apparently a highlight.
