Depeche Mode – Construction Time Again

2149990 “More Than a Party” has a solid bass line, “Pipeline” has some vague industrial undertones via ping pong balls and “Told You So” has a nice synth line that works hard at countering the clueless backing vocals. Elsewhere, the Backstreet Boys will do “Told You So”‘s “fire/desire” rhyme with much more flair on “I Want it That Way” and that the Black Eyed Peas will use the lyrics in “Shame” much better with “Where is the Love.” Yeah, comparisons to the Backstreet Boys and Black Eyed Peas: that’s what you get when you work with these egregious lyrics and shocking approximation of soul. Download “Love, in Itself” for its counterpointing grooves and horn drama and “Everything Counts” for its vibes and choruses and proceed straight to Some Great Reward if you want Depeche Mode, The Hurting if you want soulful vocals over synth pop, Dazzle Ships if you want synth pop tackling larger themes in lyrics, Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) if you want synth pop with really vague industrial undertones, Horse Rotorvator if you want straight industrial that doesn’t use it like a badge, Power, Corruption & Lies if you want to dance and why are we even here in the first place?
