Jamie xx – Far Nearer / Beat For [Single]

Jamie xx’s first release under his own name (We’re New Here is attributed to both Gil Scott-Heron and him) and … it’s one of the best singles of that year. Having a b-side that’s actually worth hearing doesn’t hurt, though “Beat For” admittedly takes a little while to get going; it doesn’t really kick in until 2 minutes in. But the a-side is 6 minutes of pure fire from start to finish, taking the template made from pre-existing artists and spinning it into Jamie xx’s own template of gorgeous steel drums. The male voice – not actually a sample, but rerecorded for the purposes of this track – is a refreshing switch-up from the all-too-common sampled contemporary R&B female voice.
