The song was written circa We Love Life, and it’s easy to see why “After You” wasn’t released until now. The chorus is extremely lazy (I wish the backing vocals were turned up a little more – they’re the only things that are actually happening), and the verses are only noticeable because Jarvis Cocker drops a David Bowie reference (“She said she–and then she–“) and later, a Ramones reference (“Hey! Ho! Let’s go!”), but does them in the most forced way possible. James Murphy does the best with what he’s given, but when the bongos drop, it just sounds like a dry-run for “Reflektor.”
